Description:
Important AU 50 Chain AMERI. Cent
1793 Chain AMERI. AU 50 PCGS. S-1, R.4. This is the finest Chain AMERI. cent we can remember handling and one of the finest pieces extant. Always of absorbing interest to both copper specialists as well as collectors of U.S. type coins, Chain AMERI. cents represent one of the first coins struck in the new mint. There is only one AMERI. variety and the Chain design was altered to the Wreath design within a few months.
Like the AU 58 coin also in this auction, this piece shows uncommonly fine detailing on Liberty's hair curls. As one might expect, the chain stands out in bold relief. Apparently the dies were slightly misaligned at the time of striking, causing the left side of the obverse (really only affecting LI of LIBERTY) and the left side of the reverse (affecting AMERI.) to not strike up completely. Also struck slightly off-center, both sides have a rich chocolate-brown color. The only surface problems are a couple of small rim nicks on the obverse between 6 and 12 o'clock, and another small one above the T in UNITED on the reverse. (NGC ID# 223G, PCGS# 1340)
