Description:
Sharp 1793 Wreath Cent, A Lovely About Uncirculated Representative
1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--AU 53 PCGS. S-9, R.2. The Mint's second attempt at a design for the large cent was Adam Eckfeldt's Wreath type. The obverse is not unlike that of the 1793 Chain cent, although Liberty's portrait is more refined and a beaded border has been added. The reverse depicts the same statutory inscriptions as the Chain cent, although a wreath has replaced the chain as the central device. Breen believes that curious citizens saved a limited number of 1793 Wreath cents as novelties, but the extant population is probably no more than 6-7% of the 63,353 pieces produced. One of the most impressive Wreath cents that this cataloger has seen, both sides of this coin display rich crimson-brown patination. We can find no fault with the strike, all devices being bold and clear. There are a few areas of microscopic planchet roughness on the reverse, but neither side reveals any features that have a negative influence on the overall eye appeal. Obviously well preserved since the late 18th century, we anticipate that this coin will have little trouble finding a new home in a prized collection of U.S. copper.
From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set. (NGC ID# 223H, PCGS# 1347)
