Popular And Well Defined Flat Pole 1794 Cent
1794 1C Head of 1794 AU55 NGC. VF35 EAC. S-21, Die State III, R.3. Described as Die State II in the Jack Robinson catalog, prior to additional die state descriptions by Walter Breen. That author accounted for 8,800 pieces of this variety delivered on January 17. Widely known as "The Flat Pole" variety and known as the Sans Milling variety by Maris, as the milling is rarely (if ever) seen completely on the obverse. The reverse is left over from S-20, the last Head of '93 variety. This particular piece shows a generous amount of milling around half the obverse, but then it fades rather quickly around the remainder. This is a lovely example with considerable sharpness. The obverse is medium brown with lighter tan on the reverse and a splash of darker brown at the center. A slight rim bump is present at 10 o'clock and there are several small abrasions seen on the obverse.
Ex: Henry C. Miller; Thomas Elder (4/17), lot 657; G. Kraft; later to Del Bland; Dr. Robert Schuman; Denis W. Loring; Jack H. Robinson (Superior, 1/29/89), lot 29.(#901374) (Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 223P, PCGS# 901374)
