Description:
1796 NC-5, B-18 Cent, AG3
Fourth Discovered Example
1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 AG3 NGC. NC-5, B-18, Low R.7. Our EAC Grade Fair 2. Breen Die State I, and the only die state he recorded for this extremely rare variety. Although a few faint hairlines are noted on the obverse, the medium brown surfaces are remarkably smooth and attractive for the grade. There are only 10 known examples of the 1796 NC-5 cent, and the Mervis Collection has two of them. This example is graded AG3 and tied for sixth finest of seven examples recorded by Del Bland. It is graded Fair 2 and eighth finest of nine examples listed by Bill Noyes. Grellman wrote that there were eight known in the Holmes catalog. See the next lot for the 10th known example. When Chuck Furjanic cherrypicked this example in 1971, it became the fourth known.
Ex: Chuck Furjanic (1971); Denis W. Loring (1974); Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz; John W. Adams (8/1980); Dr. C.R. Chambers; Dennis Mendelson (7/15/1991); Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 1/1996), lot 154; John Whitney Walter (Stack's, 5/1999), lot 1747.
