Description:
1796 S-93, B-34 Cent, AU58
The Garrett Specimen
1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1795 AU58 PCGS. S-93, B-34, R.3. Our EAC Grade AU50. Breen Die State VI, with heavy clash marks on both sides, and the lower part of the reverse die shattered, having an extremely heavy die crack through the tops of RICA. The upper obverse is weak, and that is not a result of the strike, but of the extensive die failure at the lower reverse. A splendid olive-brown cent, this piece exhibits traces of steel toning, with hints of mint red along the portrait. Bland assigns a grade of AU55, and records this coin in a sixth place tie in his condition census. Noyes grades this piece XF45 with the sharpness of AU50, and places it eighth in his census. Graded AU55 in the Garrett catalog.
