Description:
Condition Census 1796 S-85, B-6 Cent, AU50
1796 1C Liberty Cap AU50 PCGS. S-85, B-6, R.5. Breen Die State I, although with minor reverse lapping, this example was struck before the reverse die was extensively reground. Attractive dark brown and steel surfaces with excellent sharpness, and a pleasing piece overall, despite some faint scratches and abrasions. Del Bland places this piece in a tie for second place in his Condition Census, with a grade of VF35. He writes: "Sharpness of AU-50 but two obverse edge dents, one of which has been repaired, and some abrasions." Bill Noyes calls it VF25 with the sharpness of XF40 and "Average minus" surfaces. Our own opinion is right in the middle, with sharpness that approaches AU50, and a net grade of EAC 30.
