Condition Census 1797 S-120b Cent1797 1C Reverse of 1795, Gripped Edge AU53 NGC. XF45 EAC. S-120b, Die State VI, R.2. The left obverse field has an extremely shallow low area near the ribbon ends. This cent is tied for seventh finest in the Condition Census. Three other similarly graded examples have not been seen for half a century or longer. An excellent photo of the Gripped Edge feature appears in the 1996 catalog of the Robinson Brown Collection. This example was struck from one of the latest die states observed for the variety. In addition to all the cracks described in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia and also in the Robinson Brown catalog description for this very same coin, there is a weakly defined die line or flaw that curves down into the right obverse field from the border at 3 o'clock. Until someone provides evidence of a later die state, we suggest that this is the terminal die state for the variety. Pleasing agate color on both the obverse and reverse. Tiny abrasions are mostly original planchet marks that remain visible in the fields. These fields, especially on the reverse, have hints of pale green toning around the devices.
