1798 NC-2, B-16 Cent, Good 4
Sixth Finest of Seven Known
1798 1C First Hair Style Good 4 NGC. NC-2, B-16, R.7. The late die state of NC-2, with rim breaks over R and Y of LIBERTY, connected by a heavy die crack through the base of the T. Until recently, this was the only known die state for the variety, represented by five pieces that were located between the initial 1931 discovery and 1978. Since then, a perfect dies piece was discovered in 2008, and an intermediate sale, offered elsewhere in the present sale, was discovered earlier this year.
This important example has pleasing two-tone surfaces with steel-brown fields, and lighter chestnut-brown devices. The surfaces show faint roughness, but are exceptionally nice for the grade. This is the sixth finest of seven known specimens. Our EAC grade Good 5.
