Description:
1800 80/79 NC-2, B-11 Cent, VF Details
The Second Holmes Coin
1800 1C 80/79 -- Corrosion -- NGC Details. VF. NC-2, B-11, High R.6. An obverse rim break appears at the lower right on this late state piece. The surfaces have been cleaned and recolored, with a mix of tan, reddish-brown, and steel, showing moderate, patchy corrosion over much of the obverse and reverse. Del Bland grades this coin Sharpness of VF30, net VG8, and third finest. Our EAC grade VG8.
This example is the second Dan Holmes coin, lot 369 in the September 2009 sale of that collection. However, the photo in that catalog was a different coin, and the provenance information received with this specimen was from that other coin illustrated in the Holmes catalog (ex: Superior, 9/1998, lot 1213), certainly creating much confusion. For that reason, no envelopes or other documentation are available for this example.
Ex: James Picanzo (5/4/1983); Phil Abel (5/1983); Denis Loring (6/1983); Jack Robinson; McLaughlin & Robinson (2/1988), lot 88; James E. Long, Jr. (10/3/1988); Daniel W. Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 369.
