Finest Known 1801 NC-2 Cent1801 1C VF25 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. NC-2, Die State I, R.7. This is the finest of just eight known examples of this variety. Half of the known population of this variety grades just Fair 2 or Basal State 1. The variety was discovered in 1928 by George Clapp, only three years after Newcomb had published his book on 1801, 1802, and 1803 cents. A second was identified in 1931, with this example being the third and not discovered until 1956. This is an early die state with a retained cud through ES O. This was caused by clash marks from the obverse, including the entire date which remains visible on the reverse. Although a few minor imperfections and abrasions are visible on both sides, the surfaces are very pleasing overall. Lovely olive-brown color is accented by golden-brown near the devices.
Ex: C.J. Dochkus (12/56); Willard C. Blaisdell (2/75); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/92); Eric Streiner (1/94).(#1458) (Registry values: N491) (NGC ID# 224B, PCGS# 1458)
