1839 N-13 Large Cent, MS64 Brown
Distinctive Booby Head Obverse
1839 1C Booby Head MS64 Brown PCGS. N-13, R.2. MRB MS62. Crisp borders suggest an early die state, while a light die crack from ES to the rim over O suggests a later die state. A crack through UNITED STATE is seen on all known examples and provides a convenient attribution characteristic.
Frosty medium brown surfaces show full luster with delicate blue overtones and traces of mint red, especially on the reverse. Previously certified MS65 Brown PCGS and graded MS62 in the Century catalog. Noyes calls this piece MS63 and fifth finest known in his 2005 census.
Dr. Thomas Turissini is a cardiologist in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He began collecting when he was just six years old and developed an interest in large cents after purchasing a copy of Penny Whimsy in 1991. He has a discerning eye, as this cent shows, and focuses his interests in the year 1794, only in the finest condition.
