Description:

1839 N-8 Large Cent, MS64+ Brown
First Late Date Large Cent
Petite Head Design
1839 1C Head of 1840 MS64+ Brown NGC. N-8, R.1. MRB MS63. The usual die state has a bold strike and perfect dies with no cracks or other defects. The Petite Head design was introduced with this variety in 1839, and it is technically the start of the Late Date series, but is usually collected with the Middle Date cents.
Highly lustrous and satiny surfaces display full cartwheel luster and lovely yellowish-brown surfaces that are even bright yellow on the reverse. Graded MS63 and certified MS64 Brown PCGS in the Dr. Lee sale.
Dr. Wallace Lee was born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1929 and practiced dentistry in that community for 35 years until he retired in 1994. He began collecting coins in 1962 and developed an interest in early copper, buying groups of coins at auction on his way to formation of a date set. He also had an extensive collection of half cent varieties, sold through a Superior auction in May 2003.
Ex: Jim McGuigan; Dr. Wallace Lee (Superior, 5/2003), lot 892; Jon Alan Boka.
