Description:
Mint State 1850 Double Eagle
Reflective and Lightly Marked
1850 $20 MS61 NGC. The vast new inflows of California gold after 1849 caused two new gold denominations to be introduced, the one dollar the smallest in 1849, the twenty dollar or double eagle the largest, in 1850. The Philadelphia Mint struck a plentiful 1.17 million pieces of the 1850 twenty dollar, but it is eternally popular with collectors of all sorts. This Mint State example offers consistent light orange-gold toning with a hint of jade-green, and a touch of semireflectiveness in the fields increases the allure. The surfaces are lightly marked, showing no consequential contact, and the luster is complete, even if a trifle thin in the fields. Census: 23 in 61, 31 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 268F, PCGS# 8902)
