Elusive Mint State Example, 1855 Double Eagle1855 $20 MS62 PCGS. An unusually bright example of this early double eagle. Untoned and struck in a light orange-gold color. Any Type One issue, other than perhaps the 1861, is a significant coin in strict Mint State, and generally tops out near the MS62 grade. The 1855, however, is an unusually elusive issue in high grades, with most surviving specimens only grading VF or XF. This is one of the ten finest known examples, being firmly struck with complete mint frost in the fields and over all the devices. The color is uniform, and surface blemishes are numerous, but mostly superficial. Population: 3 in 62, 2 finer (6/05).(#8914)(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 268V, PCGS# 8914)
