Description

1855-O Double Eagle, AU50
Third-Rarest O-Mint Twenty

1855-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1855-O Liberty double eagle is the third-rarest O-mint twenty, with a mintage of just 8,000 pieces. The 1855-O has been overshadowed by its ultra-rare neighbors, the 1854-O and 1856-O, but it is a very scarce issue in all grades, with only 70-80 specimens still extant. Most examples seen are in the VF-XF grade range, and attractive AU coins are quite rare.

This impressive AU specimen is well-detailed, with vivid lemon-yellow surfaces and ample mint luster. A few hints of prooflike reflectivity cling to protected areas around the devices. A scattering of minor contact marks on both sides defines the grade. Population: 4 in 50, 15 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 268W, PCGS# 8915)
