Description

Central America Shipwreck
MS61 1855-S Double Eagle, Broken A

1855-S $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 14A. Ex. S.S. Central America. SSCA 6267. The A in STATES is broken, but the E is complete, hence the variety identification. S-mint double eagles from 1854 -- the first year of coinage at the San Francisco Mint -- through 1857 were found in the recovery of the Central America, which sank in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia in September 1857 with more than $2 million face value in gold on board. This piece is awash in excellent luster and deep reddish-orange color. A few distributed small marks on each side are in concert with the grade. The Slanted 5s in the date are characteristic of this era of U.S. numismatics. Population: 5 in 61, 14 finer (5/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 268X, PCGS# 8916)
