Description:
1856 Double Eagle, An Underrated Type One Issue
1856 $20 AU58 NGC. The 1856 Double Eagle is one of the true "sleeper" dates among Type One issues of this denomination. While available with some degree of frequency in lower grades, it is scarce in the medium About Uncirculated range and rare in AU58. In fact, a number of advanced collectors have been able to procure very nice examples of the celebrated New Orleans issues before adding a high grade 1856 to their set!
This green-gold example has generous portions of mint luster remaining. The cheek of Liberty is remarkably clean but three scrapes in the obverse fields could serve to distinguish this coin in the future for pedigree purposes. (NGC ID# 268Y, PCGS# 8917)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
