Description:
1856-S Double Eagle, MS63
Scarce S.S. Central America Specimen
1856-S $20 No Serif,Spike F MS63 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 5420. The vast majority of double eagles recovered from the S.S. Central America treasure site were 1857-S twenties. However, a few from earlier years were also found, such as this lovely MS63 example of the 1856-S issue. Consider the Mint State PCGS population of 330 examples of the 1856-S, and 4,368 examples of the 1857-S to understand the importance of this issue. This boldly struck specimen has splashes of lemon-yellow toning on its lighter yellow obverse surface, with subdued yellow-gold patina on the reverse. Here is a highly attractive example. PCGS has only certified 49 finer examples (3/13).
Purchased from Blanchard, with their special box and case. A copy of Tommy Thompson's book, America's Lost Treasure, accompanies this lot.(Registry values: P4) (PCGS# 70020)
