Description:
Scarce 1857 Double Eagle, MS61 PCGS
1857 $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1857 is a very scarce date, with most available specimens grading VF or XF, although AU's and an occasional Uncirculated piece are seen from time to time. In MS61 grade, that of the specimen in this lot, only 15 examples have made appearances in the major auction houses over the past 20 or so years, and 13 pieces graded higher have appeared. The present specimen is sharply struck with good luster for the grade. The most obvious surface distraction is a series of short pinscratches in the right (facing) obverse field between stars 11 and 13. Population: 15 in 61, 14 finer (5/05).(#8920) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2693, PCGS# 8920)
