Description

Near-Gem 1857-S Double Eagle
Non-
SSCA Origin

1857-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Despite its high numerical grade, vibrant mint luster, smooth surfaces, and rich peach-gold and lime-green toning, the present 1857-S twenty did not originate from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. We know this because the reverse die does not match any of the eight documented in Robert Evan's July 2000 Numismatist article. The mintmark is entered lower and further right than on any SSCA reverse. The coin was presumably struck in the later months of the year, after the gold shipment destined for the SSCA left the West Coast.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2696, PCGS# 8922)
