Description

Spiked Shield 1857-S Gem Twenty
Central America Shipwreck Recovery

1857-S $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Variety 20A. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 3691. The Spiked Shield reverse is the most common of the several varieties recovered from the disastrous hurricane-shipwreck of the S.S. Central America, and Gem examples are particularly prized by collectors of type and shipwreck-recovery collectors, as well as those who assemble sets of San Francisco Mint coinage. The small spikes though the lower-left side of the shield are visible even without a glass on the variety. This Gem beams with intense luster despite its remaining on the Atlantic Ocean floor for many decades. The color is typically gorgeous, lighter golden-canary near the rims deepening to lilac-tinted orange in the centers. Abrasions are minimal, as expected.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2696, PCGS# 8922)
