Description:
The Pittman 1858-O Double Eagle, AU58
1858-O $20 AU58 NGC. Ex: Pittman. The 1858-O twenty has the highest mintage of any New Orleans issue struck after 1853, with a total output of 35,250 coins. However, it is still an exceedingly difficult coin to locate in top grades, although three of the six pieces found in the S.S. Republic treasure are certified as MS60 or finer, doubling the NGC Census in those grades.
This piece has reflective, prooflike surfaces with excellent design details for the issue, although stars 1 through 3 are weak. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous with attractive green-gold. Light abrasions are evident on each side. Census: 26 in 58, 6 finer (10/08).
Ex: Lester Merkin (privately, 11/1961); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 1138.
From The Baltimore Collection.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2698, PCGS# 8924)
