Description

Rare Near-Mint 1859 Double Eagle

1859 $20 AU58 PCGS. The 1859 has the lowest mintage of any Type One or Type Two Philadelphia Mint double eagle, with the exception of the Paquet Reverse 1861. Since there were no contemporary collectors of the denomination, only a handful of 1859 twenties are known in Uncirculated grades. The present piece has a trace of rub on the cheek and wingtips, but each obverse star is framed by a wide band of luster. We note a pair of parallel marks on the lower left obverse field, but there are no other relevant abrasions. Population: 16 in 58, 3 finer (10/08).
From The Baltimore Collection.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 269A, PCGS# 8926)
