Description:
1859-O Double Eagle, AU50
Possibly Pike's Peak Gold
1859-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Gold deposits at the New Orleans Mint reached their peak in 1851 through 1853, and were extremely limited in the later 1850s. Records show that just 168 deposits of gold were made at that Mint in 1859, including 43 in the first quarter, 42 in the second quarter, 26 in the third quarter, and 57 in the fourth quarter. The third quarter was lowest due to the peak of summer when business activities were limited due to the desire of most wealthy citizens to escape the New Orleans humidity. Gold deposit records for New Orleans during the 1850s are available at the Fort Worth, Texas, branch of the National Archives.
A review of records from November and December 1859 yields the fascinating information that "Pike's Peaks Dust" was among the gold deposited at New Orleans.
A lone die pair was used for production of 9,100 coins. This lovely AU specimen has light greenish-gold surfaces with hints of coppery-rose toning on each side. Considerable luster is still visible, especially in the protected areas. Population: 9 in 50, 17 finer (2/12).
Ex: Bowers and Merena (8/2010), lot 1831.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269B, PCGS# 8927)
