Description:
Seldom-Seen 1859-O Double Eagle, AU53
1859-O $20 AU53 PCGS. The 1859-O is the fourth scarcest O-mint double eagle, after the 1856-O, 1854-O, and the 1855-O. Only 9,100 pieces were produced of this scarcity, and no more than 85 coins are believed extant today in all grades. While as many as 20 of these coins grade AU, most are heavily abraded and display evidence of having been cleaned at one time or another. This is a pleasing orange-gold coin that retains small portions of an original prooflike finish around the devices. Well, but not fully struck, the surfaces show numerous small abrasions but none that merit individual mention. There are two faint alloy spots, one on the neck of Liberty and the other out in the field, that might serve as useful pedigree identifiers on this important New Orleans coin. Population: 10 in 53, 9 finer (10/03).
