Description:
Extremely Scarce 1859-O Double Eagle AU55
1859-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Bright orange-gold surfaces retain much of their semi-reflective luster and show fewer than the expected number of abrasions in the fields. Contact marks on Liberty's eye and below across the nose, although ill-placed, are not large enough to be severe. Familiar die clashing is seen near the hair curls on the portrait, with both rays and the faint outline of a star being visible. These are seen in varying degrees on virtually every 1859-O Twenty and, in fact, are a reliable method of authentication. All details are quite bold, including the mintmark, which can sometimes be indistinct on the issue.
The 1859-O, one of just 9,100 pieces struck, is a standout rarity among O-mint double eagles and ranks behind only the near-legendary 1854-O and 1856-O issues, being about on par with the similar mintage 1855-O. A similarly graded example sold by Heritage in last year's ANA Sale boldly approached the $50,000 barrier ($48,875 to be exact) and an AU58 in last year's FUN Sale fetched $92,000, so we expect an equally impressive figure for this desirable representative. Population: 4 in 55, 5 finer (11/05).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269B, PCGS# 8927)

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
