Description:
Important 1859-S Doubled Die $20
1859-S $20 AU53 NGC. FS-011, Breen-7199. Doubled Liberty. Not identified as such on the NGC holder. Struck from a doubled obverse die, and extremely important and rare as such. The doubling is visible primarily on LIBERTY, and is most prominent on ERTY. Additional doubling is visible on other elements of Liberty, including the eye, hair line along the neck and face, and the entire profile from neck to forehead. Over the years, we have only handled a few examples of this variety. NGC lists seven examples of this variety in their Census, although there are certainly a few others, such as this one, that have not yet been identified as this variety. Lustrous yellow-gold with considerable pale pink color. The surfaces are moderately abraded as expected for this issue.(#8928) (Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 269C, PCGS# 8928)
