Lustrous Near Mint 1860-S Double Eagle1860-S $20 AU58 NGC. This issue is surprisingly scarce, especially in higher grades. The 1860-S double eagle was coined between naval disasters, being minted after the S.S. Central America tragedy, and enough before the sinking of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic to have many examples lost and recovered. Despite a higher population, only about two dozen examples of this date survive in Mint State grades. This specimen is nearly at the elusive Mint State grade level, with only the slightest evidence of wear on each side. The surfaces have frosty yellow-gold luster with essentially full brilliance. It is a well struck example with nearly full design details on each side. Choice quality, overall, with few surface marks of any type.
