Lovely Choice AU 1861-O Double Eagle, An Important Wartime Rarity1861-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Struck in the South in the year the Civil War began, a numismatic legend has grown up around this issue. Allegedly, the coins that show weakness on the bottom digits of the date were struck under the auspices of the State of Louisiana or the Confederacy. While unprovable it does make a good story. Most of the surviving examples of this issue are VF or XF with AU pieces being very elusive. The surfaces are bright and semi-reflective with deep golden-yellow coloration. Surprisingly clean, the only noticeable flaw is a planchet lamination by star 12 on the obverse. Oh, and by the way, the bottom of the date is weakly struck.
