Description

1861-O Double Eagle, VF30
Historic New Orleans Issue

1861-O $20 VF30 PCGS. This 1861-O double eagle could have been struck under authority of the United States, the state of Louisiana, or the Confederacy, as all three entities had control of the New Orleans Mint during portions of 1861. Garrett and Guth estimate that fewer than 200 examples of the 1861-O survive today in all grades. This piece demonstrates even wear over the devices and from side to side, with subdued orange color. The numerous abrasions are consistent with the VF30 grade. Mentionable contact includes a long, thin scrape from the nose into the upper left obverse field, and a couple of short ticks at the termination of that mark. Two mentionable marks appear on the reverse, one in the oval of stars, the other actually two marks under the right (facing) wing. A nice, midgrade example of this historic and interesting issue.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 269J, PCGS# 8934)

Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
