Seldom-Seen Almost Uncirculated 1861-S Paquet Twenty1861-S $20 Paquet AU50 NGC. The Paquet reverse was not generally recognized as a variety until the 1930s. A number of pieces were located in Europe some twenty years later, and while these coins have increased the availability of the Paquet somewhat it still remains the scarcest S-mint double eagle. The reduced protective rim on the reverse was the primary reason for the demise of Anthony Paquet's modifications. This led to excessive wear and abrasions on the coins, which is one reason so few high grade examples are known. This particular coin shows a number of abrasions on the obverse, but the reverse is remarkably clean with the only mentionable marks being a cluster under the right (facing) wing of the eagle and a small rim bump at 9 o'clock. A thin layer of mint luster is seen on each side, mostly around the outer devices, and there is just the slightest hint of reddish patina present.
