1862 $20 XF40 NGC....
Elusive 1862 Twenty, XF401862 $20 XF40 NGC. While the San Francisco Mint continued to churn out hundreds of thousands of double eagles, seemingly unaffected by eastern hoarding activities during the Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint was reluctant to manufacture any precious metals coins. Only 92,133 double eagles were struck in Philadelphia during the war, and examples are elusive, In fact, the Smithsonian Institute doesn't even have an example. The present specimen has attractive light yellow surfaces with splashes of orange toning on the obverse. The surfaces are lightly abraded, typical for these large gold coins.
