1863-S $20 MS61 PCGS....
Civil War-Era 1863-S Double Eagle, MS611863-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The vast majority of the Civil War's fighting left the Western, Union-aligned states -- California and Oregon at the start of the war, and Nevada beginning in 1864 -- largely untouched in an economic sense. At a time when gold was hoarded back east, the San Francisco Mint was striking large quantities of double eagles, approaching a million in the case of the 1863-S. This is a scarce Mint State representative of the issue, softly struck on the high points with subtle yellow-to-orange luster but considerable all-around appeal. Shallow cuts on Liberty's cheekbone and chin contribute to the grade. Population: 18 in 61, 20 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269R, PCGS# 8940)
