Description

Elusive MS63 1863-S S.S. Republic Twenty

1863-S $20 MS63 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Small S. Both the recovered shipwrecks of the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan yielded survivors of this issue, common in lower grades but quite rare in high grades. However, most of the recovered coins are About Uncirculated; this example, in a special NGC S.S. Republic holder, ranks as one of the dozen finest graded at both services combined, save for a single MS64 at PCGS (8/06). A number of light abrasions, ticks, and light scrapes, confined mostly to the obverse, define the grade. But the luster is brilliant, and the reverse is nearly pristine. Both sides are a delectable honey-gold. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the highest graded examples of this elusive issue--one that exceeds the Smithsonian Institution's finest example by 13 points.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269R, PCGS# 8940)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
