Description

Select 1865 Twenty, Ex: S.S. Republic
Philadelphia's Answer to the 1857-S

1865 $20 MS63 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. A newly minted 1865 double eagle gold coin is put on a ship bound for New Orleans. Along with many other gold and silver coins, it will help restart the economy of an important port city ravaged by the Civil War. Yet a hurricane gets in the way, sinking the ship and sending its precious cargo to the seabed.
Though this Select example was far from new when it was recovered from the wreck of the Republic, yet it retains its shining luster. Only a handful of obverse stars show any striking weakness, and though the reverse has its share of rim nicks and light abrasions, the obverse shows few such flaws aside from a narrow horizontal line on the cheek. Comes in an S.S. Republic presentation box with slipcover and still-shrinkwrapped informative DVD.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
