Description

1865 Double Eagle, MS64
Ex:
S.S. Republic Shipwreck

1865 $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Dazzling cartwheel luster sweeps this fully struck almond-gold near-Gem. Minor delicate grazes are present but are fewer than expected for the MS64 level. The 1865 was considered rare in Uncirculated grades prior to the recovery of the S.S. Republic shipwreck, which occurred on October 18, 1865. The ship carried $400,000 in coins destined for New Orleans, which had a shortage of currency due to the recent Civil War. Many of the coins were freshly minted Philadelphia double eagles. The wreck was located in August 2003 and about one-third the value of the transported coins was recovered. As of (6/13), NGC has certified a total of 288 1865 twenties as S.S. Republic, 73 in MS64 and 22 finer.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
