Description

1865 Double Eagle, MS64
Brightly Lustrous and Impeccably Preserved

1865 $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The moderate mintage of the 1865 double eagle was 351,175 pieces -- not an overlarge amount for a Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint -- most of which apparently slipped quietly into circulation with little notice. Until the recovery of the S.S. Republic, most known examples were circulated, usually to the extent of VF or XF. Although this piece is not noted as a shipwreck coin, the bright, shimmering luster over impeccably preserved surfaces bears all the hallmarks. The strike is virtually full on each side, with complete star details on both sides. A few faint marks appear on the face of Liberty and in the left obverse field, in concert with the grade. The surfaces are yellow-gold with a faint reddish tint. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
