Description

1866-S No Motto Twenty, XF
Among the Rarest Series Issues

1866-S $20 No Motto XF40 NGC. The 1866-S No Motto double eagle is seldom seen in properly graded XF condition, as here, and AU examples are virtually the top of the scale. The issue overall is second only to the illustrious 1861-S Paquet reverse twenty, and Akers writes that "in rarity according to the average grade, the 1866-S No Motto is tied for first with the 1870-CC and 1871-CC." This is a superlative example for the XF grade level, with far fewer signs of contact than usual for this issue, which is typically heavily bagmarked. Attractive orange-red color and an adequate strike contribute further to the excellent eye appeal.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 269W, PCGS# 8945)
