Description:

1868-S Twenty
Eye-Appealing Uncirculated Example
1868-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Despite a copious mintage that exceeded 837,000 pieces, the 1868-S twenty dollar issue seldom appears in Mint State grades, as most examples of the issue clearly circulated in the Old West. Garrett and Guth write that the "best Harry W. Bass Jr. could muster in his years of searching" was an AU58 coin. This MS61 example is among the few to cross the Mint State threshold, showing generous luster over apricot-gold surfaces that show no trace of rub but do display scattered contact marks on each side, in keeping with the grade. The eye appeal is nonetheless nicer than might be expected for the grade and issue. Population: 10 in 61, 1 finer (7/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26A4, PCGS# 8954)
