Description:

Mint State 1869 Double Eagle
Bright Orange-Gold Surfaces
1869 $20 MS61 PCGS. The Reconstruction-era mintage of the 1869 Philadelphia double eagle was a moderate 175,130 business strikes, an amount about one-quarter of what San Francisco would produce in the same year. Garrett and Guth write that "most of the coins that were not melted or exported are heavily bagmarked and range in grade from Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated." This Mint State specimen is clearly exceptional, showing bright prooflike fields on the obverse; the reverse is also mirrored, but not to the same extent. The strike is sharp, and deep orange-gold color prevails throughout. Only light abrasions appear, with no marks of importance on either side. Population: 9 in 61, 15 finer (5/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26A5, PCGS# 8955)
