1871 $20 MS61 NGC....
Surprising MS61 1871 Double Eagle1871 $20 MS61 NGC. Garrett and Guth offer an excellent capsule summary of the 1871 twenty in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins:
"This date has the lowest mintage of any Philadelphia Type 2 double eagle. It is scarce in all grades, with the average survivor rating Very Fine or Extremely Fine. Most are heavily abraded or harshly cleaned. ... Mint State specimens are very rare and seldom seen."
While this coin has moderate to heavy abrasions across each side, it is also remarkably appealing, as suggested by the Star designation. Luster is the key, as both obverse and reverse fields offer pale yellow-gold reflectivity. The well struck obverse also shows a touch of frostiness. NGC has graded just four numerically finer examples (10/10).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 26AA, PCGS# 8960)
