Description:
Rare 1871-CC Double Eagle
AU Sharpness
1871-CC $20 --Obverse Planchet Flaw--NGC. AU Details. Although not a catalog cover item like the 1870-CC, the 1871-CC is nonetheless a rarity. Just 17,387 pieces were struck, and most of the 200 or so survivors spent years in rough Old West circulation. This is a subdued apricot-gold example with minimal friction and no noticeable obverse marks. Moderate reverse abrasions are noted near the eagle's head, tail, and arrows. A small bullet-shaped lamination is northwest of obverse star 13, apparently caused by a gram or two of slag at the top of the planchet strip prior to the strike. Since the lamination is of mint origin, it does not affect the technical grade, and has only marginal impact on the eye appeal.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 26AB, PCGS# 8961)
