Select Mint State 1877-S Double Eagle1877-S $20 MS63 PCGS. This is a wonderful representative of the new Type Three design, and a condition rarity in the double eagle series. When collectors and numismatists think of the new design, the immediate change that comes to mind is the expanded version of the denomination, which now reads TWENTY DOLLARS rather than the former TWENTY D. Less thought is given to the obverse with its modified placement of the head of Liberty. The bust line is at a steeper angle and the coronet point is now centered between stars 6 and 7. The older type had the coronet point just below star 7. The example offered here is one of the finest survivors with frosty yellow-gold luster and wispy pink toning. Light abrasions on each side are consistent with the grade. The PCGS population data explains the importance of this example. Population: 18 in 63, 3 finer (6/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26B2, PCGS# 8984)
