Description

1879-CC Twenty, Near-Mint Example
Scarce, Low-Mintage Issue

1879-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1879-CC is among the lowest mintage Carson City double eagles. Only 10,708 pieces were struck, and among the few hundred survivors, most are in XF and lower grades. Mintages fell across all denominations in 1879 at Carson City; in fact, production of dimes, quarters, and half dollars ceased completely. Bright luster fills the major devices and the peripheries. This piece is less abraded than the great majority of Borderline Uncirculated twenties, and the sole contact mark remotely worthy of individual mention is found above the E in LIBERTY. A hint of friction on the left portion of Liberty's cheek and on her brow prevents a Mint State designation.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 3158.
