Description:
Very Scarce, Low Mintage 1879-O Double Eagle, AU55
1879-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Similar to the Ronald Brown 1879-O, this piece shows a mixture of mint frost and semi-prooflikeness on each side. This appears to be a common trait on this issue. Also similar to the Brown coin, this piece has a distinctive grease stain, in this case a vertical one above and to the right of the eagle's head. 90-100 pieces are believed known today out of the 2,325 coins struck, with 12-14 examples extant in AU condition. Sharply struck, the surfaces are bright and very pleasing with minimal abrasions with just a touch of light reddish patina. Possibly a Condition Census item in AU55 and with surfaces this choice.
