Historic 1879-O Type Three Double Eagle VF351879-O $20 VF35 PCGS. Shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, Confederate forces captured the New Orleans Mint, operating it for a short period before it was shut down entirely. The mint reopened in 1879 for coinage and continued production until 1909, mostly silver dollars and lower denomination coins. The 1879-O double eagle has the second-lowest mintage--2,325 pieces--among O-mint double eagles, slightly more than the celebrated 1856-O twenty. The 1879-O was, however, saved in greater numbers. It is the last double eagle struck in Louisiana., and the only Type Three O-mint issue. The present example has pleasing surfaces for the grade, with attractive medium yellow color. The fields retain traces of luster. Overall, it is an attractive and desirable example.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 26B8, PCGS# 8990)
