Description

1879-O Liberty Double Eagle, XF40
The Only Type Three O-Mint Twenty

1879-O $20 XF40 NGC. The New Orleans Mint was closed at the dawn of the Civil War and remained closed many years afterward. After passage of the 1878 Bland-Allison Act, the government needed every available coinage facility, including New Orleans, for Morgan dollar production. Reopening in 1879, the Louisiana facility coined nearly 3 million silver dollars, along with 1,500 eagles and 2,325 double eagles.
As the only Type Three Liberty twenty from that mint, the 1879-O is extremely popular with collectors. This piece is a pleasing XF with green-gold surfaces, tinges of bluish-violet peripheral toning, traces of luster, and only minor marks. Census: 9 in 40, 58 finer (5/11).
