Description:

Low-Mintage 1880 Double Eagle, MS62
Only Four Finer at PCGS
1880 $20 MS62 PCGS. The Philadelphia mintages of both quarter eagles and double eagles plummeted from prior-year levels in 1880, the year that noted 19th century collector Charles I. Bushnell died. (As far as we know, the two events are unrelated.) In the case of the double eagle, only 51,420 pieces were made, compared to more than 200,000 in 1879. Garrett and Guth note that "many great collections from the past have lacked an example," (we do not know about the Bushnell Collection, although we doubt he collected large-denomination gold coins; his cabinet was replete with Colonial and Washingtonia items). At any rate, this MS62 PCGS example is surpassed by only four submissions at that service. This piece offers great strike definition throughout. Some scattered grease stains dot the obverse of this light reddish-gold example. There are few abrasions, with the most significant marks a wispy abrasion off the 0 and another above the top of the 1 in the date. Population: 5 in 62, 4 finer (5/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26BA, PCGS# 8992)
