1880-S Double Eagle--Exceptional MS64 Quality1880-S $20 MS64 NGC. In Mint State grades, the 1880-S is the fourth rarest of thirty Type Three Double Eagles from this mint. It has a similar grade distribution to the 1877-S and the 1878-S. These dates are mostly seen in the AU53 to AU58 grade range and do not appear to have seen widespread commercial usage. When available in Uncirculated, all of these early Type Three issues from San Francisco are seen with nice color and luster but usually show heavy, detracting abrasions. The 1880-S is very scarce in MS62, very rare in MS63, and extremely rare above this. The NGC MS64 in the Eagle Collection is one of just two that have been certified as such by a major grading service and the only one by NGC.
From viewing this piece, one would never know that heavy abrasions are a problem for this issue. The surfaces are exceptionally clean on each side, and the mint luster is bright and has taken on a pronounced reddish hue. (NGC ID# 26BB, PCGS# 8993)
