Description

Low-Mintage 1881 Twenty Dollar, AU53
With Prooflike Device Outlines

1881 $20 AU53 PCGS. The 1881 double eagle from the Philadelphia Mint is the first in a string of low-mintage (and sometimes no-mintage, in the case of the 1883, 1884, and 1887) circulation strikes, during a decade when Treasury and Mint personnel adopted a policy favoring larger mintages of the eagle and half eagle at the expense of the quarter eagle and double eagle. The 1881 twenties were produced to the extent of 2,199 business strikes plus 61 proofs, although the 1882 issue tends to overshadow it, at 571 circulation coins. The surfaces on each side of this AU53 PCGS example show some light field chatter and numerous small abrasions scattered over each side, but a trace of prooflikeness remains around the devices. The only noticeable marks are a small cluster is in the left obverse field. The surfaces are deep orange-gold with lilac accents on the obverse over the portrait of Liberty. Population: 3 in 53, 7 finer (9/12).
